In the UK, Yorkshire-based Abingdon Health have secured a UK Government order for one million of the biotech’s COVID-19 AbC-19 Rapid Tests. This rapid antibody tests uses a small drop of blood from a finger-prick and shows results in 20 minutes.
If we move across Europe to Spain, there’s been crucial work done by start-up, Indicate Solutions, to provide tests for its native nation, Portugal and other areas of Europe.
Its hybrid microfluidics-lateral flow device, RepViT, does not need pre-processing of blood, expensive equipment or specialized personnel – making it ideal for frontline testing. The test provides results in just 3-minutes, detecting the viral genome from nasal or buccal swabs.
Major corporations have made a big impact too and to support regions the size of North America, this is absolutely vital. In the US, Abbott Diagnostics, has been the number one supplier of Covid-19 tests. With its IDNOW COVID-19 is the fastest test available in the region, delivering positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in 13 minutes.
Over in APAC, Singapore-based Credo Diagnostics Biomedical is making a big difference. Its VitaPCR is being used throughout Asia and delivers results in less than 20 minutes.
That’s not all, Credo is also providing test to areas of Europe and is partnered with the World Health Organisation to support lesser developed parts of the world.
As you can see, the diagnostics space is doing crucial work to detect and limit the spread of Covid-19 all over the world – with companies both big and small contributing to the cause. While there’s still lots of work to be done, it’s great to serve a market that’s comes together like this in a time of uncertainty and see so many different technologies at work.
